How to choose a coffee machine cleaner

Most coffee machines need more than one product, because each one does a different job. Cleaning tablets and powders remove coffee oils from the brew group. Descaler removes the mineral scale that builds up inside boilers and pipes. Milk system cleaner removes milk fat and protein from steam wands and milk lines. A water filter slows the scale down in the first place. Start with your machine type and its manual, then pick one product for each job. Espresso machine cleaner and grinder cleaner have their own sections below.

Espresso machine cleaner: backflush powder, sachets and tablets

If your machine has a portafilter (group handle), clean the group head by backflushing it with a blind filter and an espresso machine cleaner. The cleaner is a detergent that dissolves the coffee oils, fine grounds and stains that build up in the group head, shower screen, portafilter and baskets. Choose by format:

EVO and Tevo are Cafetto's organic range: free from phosphates and chlorine and registered by Australian Certified Organic. To backflush, fit the blind filter, add the cleaner and lock the portafilter in. Run the pump for 10 seconds, then stop for 10 seconds, five times in all. Rinse the portafilter, repeat the cycle with water only, then pull and discard one shot. Cafés backflush with detergent every night and soak portafilters and baskets weekly; home machines are cleaned less often. Check your manual first, because not every machine is designed to be backflushed.

Fully automatic machines: cleaning tablets

Bean-to-cup machines run a cleaning program that takes a tablet sized for that machine. Use Jura 3-Phase Cleaning Tablets in a Jura. Cafetto recommends J25 tablets for Jura and Krups machines, and S15 tablets for Miele and several other automatic brands. Breville Cino Cleano tablets are Breville's own. Some manufacturers tell you to use only their own tablets, so check your manual first.

Descaler for limescale

Cleaning tablets do not remove scale, and descaler does not remove coffee oil. Descalers use acids to dissolve mineral build-up. Cafetto Renew uses organic acids: each 25 g sachet makes 1 litre of solution, and Cafetto says it is safe on aluminium, brass and stainless steel. For liquids, choose Cafetto LOD, Breville Eco Liquid Descaler or LOD BLACK. LOD BLACK is a heavy-duty formula that Cafetto does not recommend for aluminium. Breville Eco 2-in-1 cleans and descales in one cycle, and Jura owners should use Jura Descaling Tablets. Compare every descaler in our descalers and decalcifiers range.

Milk system cleaners

Milk residue builds up quickly in steam wands, frothers and automatic milk lines. Liquid cleaners such as Cafetto BLUE DAILY, Organic GREEN and Milk Line Cleaner suit frothers and milk lines. Jura machines take Jura Milk System Cleaner, and WMF machines take Urnex Rinza.

Water filters

An in-tank filter reduces how much scale reaches the boiler. Match the filter to your machine. Jura machines use the CLARIS Smart+ or an older CLARIS filter. Breville machines use the Claro Swiss. Lelit, Profitec/ECM and WMF machines also have their own filters in this range.

Grinder cleaner and drip filter machines

Every dose you grind leaves coffee oil and fine particles on the burrs and inside the casing, and over time that residue goes stale and carries into fresh coffee. Grinder cleaning tablets are ground through like beans and remove the residue as they pass, so you don't need to take the burrs out. Both cleaners here do the same job and are used the same way. Choose Cafetto Grinder Clean if you want a grain-based formula registered for organic systems and halal certified, or you already use Cafetto in your café. Choose Urnex Grindz if you want a plant-based, food-safe tablet with a published dose for both espresso grinders (one capful, 35 to 40 g) and larger shop grinders (two capfuls). Cafetto's dose is one capful. Both are for standalone burr grinders, not the grinder inside a bean-to-cup machine.

To use them, empty the hopper and run the grinder until no beans are left, add one dose on a medium setting and grind it all through. Wipe the dust from the hopper and chute, then grind a small dose of beans and throw the grounds away to re-season the burrs. Drip brewers have their own cleaner in Moccamaster Clean, which removes coffee oil build-up from inside the brewer.

Cleaning supplies for cafés and offices

Bulk sizes such as Cafetto Renew 2 kg and the 100-tablet tubs suit busy machines. Cleaning products are sold at the regular price, but businesses that also buy coffee can apply for a business account for B2B pricing on coffee, up to 25% off RRP.

FAQs

What is the best cleaner for a coffee machine?

The best cleaner depends on your machine. A manual espresso machine with a portafilter needs a backflush powder or tablet, such as Cafetto Espresso Clean. A fully automatic machine needs a cleaning tablet sized for its cleaning program, often the manufacturer's own. Most machines also need a descaler, and a milk system cleaner if you make milk drinks. Your manual will say which products and formats it accepts.

What is the difference between cleaning tablets and descaling tablets?

Cleaning tablets are a detergent that removes coffee oils and residue from the brew group and coffee spouts. Descaling tablets are acid-based and dissolve the mineral scale that builds up in the boiler, pipes and heating element. They are not interchangeable, so most machines need both on their own schedules. Jura, for example, sells separate 3-Phase Cleaning Tablets and Descaling Tablets.

How do I backflush an espresso machine with cleaning powder?

Swap the filter basket for a blind filter and add one scoop of cleaner, such as Cafetto Espresso Clean. Lock in the group handle and run the pump for 10 seconds, then stop. Repeat five times. Remove the handle and rinse it. Put it back in and run a series of short on-off cycles with clean water to rinse the group. Finish by pulling and discarding one espresso. Only backflush if your machine's manual allows it.

How often should I descale my coffee machine?

Follow your machine's descale alert or the interval in its manual. How often you need to descale depends on how hard your water is and how much coffee you make. Hard water and heavy use mean more frequent descaling. Fitting the correct water filter, such as a Jura CLARIS or Breville Claro Swiss, slows scale build-up. Replace the filter on time, or it stops protecting the machine.

Which cleaning tablets suit a Jura or Miele coffee machine?

For a Jura, use Jura 3-Phase Cleaning Tablets. Cafetto also recommends its J25 tablets for Jura and Krups machines. For Miele, Cafetto recommends its S15 tablets. Automatic machines need a tablet of the right size for their cleaning program. Check your manual before switching from the manufacturer's own tablets.

Do I still need to descale if I use a water filter?

Usually less often, and sometimes not at all. Jura says descaling is not needed while a CLARIS filter is fitted and changed on time. For other brands, a filter slows scale build-up but does not always remove the need to descale. Follow your machine's prompts and manual.

What is espresso machine cleaner?

It is a detergent made to dissolve coffee oils, fine grounds and stains from the group head, shower screen, portafilter and baskets of an espresso machine. You use it by backflushing with a blind filter, or by soaking parts in hot water with a scoop or tablet. It rinses away cleanly, so it doesn't taint your next shot once you have flushed with water and discarded one espresso.

How often should I backflush my espresso machine with cleaner?

In a café, backflush with detergent every night and soak portafilters and baskets weekly. That is the schedule Urnex recommends for commercial machines. At home, most people clean less often. Cafetto's directions use one scoop of Espresso Clean for a daily clean and two scoops when the machine is cleaned less frequently. Check your machine's manual for its recommended interval.

How do I clean my portafilter and baskets?

Remove the basket and soak the metal parts in 500 mL of hot water with two scoops of Cafetto Espresso Clean or EVO powder, or one Espresso Clean or Tevo Maxi tablet, for 10 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly under hot running water. Keep plastic parts out of the solution, and avoid soaking a portafilter with a wooden or plastic handle.

Should I buy cleaning powder or tablets?

Powder is the most economical and flexible choice. You can dose more for a machine that hasn't been cleaned for a while, and use it for soaking parts. Tablets and sachets are pre-measured, so they are quicker and tidier, which suits home users and busy staff. Cafetto's EVO powder and Tevo tablets are its organic range if you prefer phosphate-free cleaners.

What is coffee grinder cleaner?

Coffee grinder cleaner is a set of tablets or pellets that you grind through a burr grinder in place of coffee beans. As they pass through, they remove coffee oil, residue and old grounds from the burrs and casing, so you don't need to take the grinder apart. You then grind a small amount of coffee to clear out the cleaner before making coffee again. We stock Cafetto and Urnex Grindz.

How much Grindz or Cafetto grinder cleaner should I use?

For Grindz, Urnex recommends one capful (35 to 40 g) for an espresso grinder and two capfuls (70 to 80 g) for a larger shop grinder, run on a medium grind setting. For Cafetto Grinder Clean, use one capful. With either product, then grind some coffee beans to season the burrs and clear the cleaner, and wipe any dust from the hopper and chute.

How often should I clean my coffee grinder?

Neither Cafetto nor Urnex sets a fixed schedule, so it depends on how much coffee you grind. A busy café grinder builds up residue much faster than a home grinder making a few coffees a day. Clean it when the coffee starts to taste flat or stale, when you notice oily build-up around the burrs, or after you have been grinding very oily or flavoured beans.

What is the difference between Cafetto and Urnex Grindz?

They are used the same way: you grind them through an empty burr grinder and then purge with beans. Cafetto Grinder Clean is a grain-based formula registered by Australian Certified Organic as an allowed input in organic systems, and it is also halal certified. Urnex Grindz is a plant-based, food-safe, phosphate-free tablet, with doses given for both espresso and larger shop grinders.
