How to choose a portafilter for your espresso machine

A portafilter is the handle that holds the filter basket and locks into your machine's group head. It has to match the group exactly, so the machine you own decides which portafilter you can use, before handle, wood or basket size come into it. Every portafilter here is made by the machine's maker for that maker's own groups. If your machine isn't listed below, call us with the model before you order.

Which portafilter fits which machine

Bottomless or spouted portafilter

A bottomless portafilter has no spouts, so you see the underside of the basket as the shot runs. Choose one if you are learning to dial in or chasing an uneven extraction: a jet spraying from one spot shows you where your distribution or tamp needs work. Choose a spouted portafilter if you want to split a double into two cups or keep the bench tidy while you brew. The Lelit double wooden pours from a Coffee Slide spout at the front, which Lelit designed to keep coffee off the worktop and which leaves you a clear view of the pour. If you can't decide, the Profitec modular portafilter does both: it brews bottomless, and the Profitec silicone spouts clip on in a one or two spout version when you want a spouted shot.

Lelit 58 mm portafilters: design handle or wood

The VIP PLA580V has Lelit's brown technopolymer design handle, shaped to support your hand while you tamp, and a stainless steel double basket for 18 to 21 g. Choose it if you want the bottomless view without paying for wood. The bottomless wooden comes in walnut or black walnut with the same 18 to 21 g basket. The double wooden is the spouted one, in walnut, black walnut, maple or zebrano, and it comes with a single basket, doubles for 14 to 18 g and 18 to 21 g, and a blind basket for backflushing, so it can replace the portafilter your machine came with. Every wooden handle is cut from a different piece of timber, so the shade and grain on yours will vary from the photos. Browse the machines these suit in our Lelit coffee machines range.

Profitec modular portafilter and silicone spouts

Profitec designed its bottomless portafilter so the coffee is evenly saturated as it brews, and it comes with a 21 g double basket. The silicone spouts are an accessory for this portafilter only. Profitec says silicone has less mass to heat up than a metal spout and is easy to clean, and its low profile leaves more room between the portafilter and your cup, which makes different cup sizes and a scale under the cup easier to fit. See the machines it comes with in our Profitec coffee machines range.

Rocket bottomless portafilter

The genuine Rocket bottomless portafilter is made in Italy and includes a 21 g filter basket. Rocket sizes its own tamper at 58 mm for all its machines, so a 58 mm tamper is the one to pair with it. Choose it if you own a machine from our Rocket Espresso range and want a second portafilter or your first bottomless one.

FAQs

What size portafilter does my machine take?

Your manual or the maker's spec sheet will tell you, and it's worth checking before you buy anything that touches the basket. Lelit names the group on every machine: the Anna has the LELIT57 group, the Victoria and Elizabeth have the LELIT58 group, and the Mara X and Bianca have the L58E group, which takes LELIT58 tools. Rocket makes its 58 mm tamper to suit all its machines, and Profitec's manuals recommend a 58 mm tamper. If you're still unsure, send us the model and we'll tell you which portafilter fits.

Will these portafilters fit a Breville machine?

No. A Breville machine with a 54 mm group takes a smaller portafilter than anything here, so none of these will fit it. Lelit has been part of the Breville Group since 2022, but Lelit's portafilters are still made for Lelit's own 57 mm and 58 mm groups, not for Breville machines. If you own a Breville, look for a portafilter sold specifically for your model.

Will a 58 mm portafilter fit any machine with a 58 mm or E61 group?

Not necessarily. A 58 mm figure describes the basket, not how the portafilter locks into the group, and Lelit, Profitec and Rocket each state fit for their own machines only. The Lelit 58 mm portafilters are listed for the LELIT58 group, and Lelit says the L58E group on the Mara X and Bianca takes LELIT58 tools. We won't promise a fit on another brand's machine, so tell us the make and model and we'll check before you order.

Which portafilter suits a Lelit Anna?

Only the Lelit bottomless 57 mm. The Anna has Lelit's 57 mm group, and Lelit lists its 58 mm portafilters, including the VIP PLA580V and the wooden models, for the LELIT58 group only. The 57 mm bottomless comes with an 18 to 21 g double basket, larger than the 14 to 18 g double that comes with the Anna, so plan to adjust your dose and grind when you change over. Use a tamper that matches the inside of the 57 mm basket.

Can I turn a bottomless portafilter into a spouted one?

With the Profitec modular portafilter, yes. Profitec makes clip-on silicone spouts in one and two spout versions, and Profitec describes the portafilter as working bottomless, with a single spout or with dual spouts. The Lelit and Rocket bottomless portafilters are bottomless only. If you want a spouted Lelit 58 mm handle, the Lelit double wooden portafilter has a front Coffee Slide spout and comes with four baskets.

What filter basket comes with each portafilter?

The Lelit VIP PLA580V, the Lelit bottomless wooden and the Lelit bottomless 57 mm each come with an 18 to 21 g double basket. The Profitec modular and the Rocket bottomless each include a 21 g basket. The Lelit double wooden comes with a single basket, doubles for 14 to 18 g and 18 to 21 g, and a blind basket for backflushing. Choose the basket for the dose you normally brew, and keep the blind basket for cleaning.
