How to choose a commercial espresso machine

Every machine here is a traditional, barista-operated espresso machine. You grind, dose and tamp the coffee and steam the milk; the machine holds brew temperature and pressure and stops each shot at a programmed volume. If nobody on site will make the coffee, look at office and workplace coffee machines instead.

One group or two

A group is the brew head the portafilter locks into, and each one makes a single or double shot at a time. A one-group machine suits steady, lower-volume service: an office kitchen, a small café, a cart or a restaurant's back bar. Two groups let two people work at once, or one barista keep shots going through a rush, which is why most cafés choose them. If bench space is tight, the ECM Elektronika Profi Due fits two groups into a 585 mm wide body.

The machines in this range

  • Rocket Boxer: a heat exchanger machine with a thermosiphon loop, an 8.3 litre copper boiler on the 1 Group and 13.2 litres on the 2 Group, automatic portion control and a cool-touch steam wand handle.
  • ECM Elektronika: heat exchanger machines with a rotary pump that run from a built-in tank or a direct water connection. The Profi Due has four programmable doses per group; the Elektronika Profi Rotary is the single-group option.
  • Crem EX3: a pre-infusion chamber in each group, a five-button volumetric keypad, PID temperature control on display versions and automatic boiler filling. Available as a 1 Group or 2 Group.
  • Expobar MegaCrem: a copper boiler with a heat exchanger for each group, automatic boiler refill and a backflush program. Choose the 1 Group, the 2 Group or the lower-priced ex-demo 1 Group.

Power

Check the rated power on the product page before you order. At 240 V, a standard 10 amp outlet supplies about 2,400 W and a 15 amp outlet about 3,600 W. Rocket rates the Boxer 1 Group at 2.3 kW and the Boxer 2 Group at 4.3 kW, so the bigger machine needs a dedicated, higher-rated circuit. A 15 amp plug will not fit a 10 amp outlet, and any new outlet or circuit must be installed by a licensed electrician.

Water and filtration

Commercial machines are usually plumbed into a cold water line with a drain. The ECM machines can switch between their tank and a direct connection, which helps where there is no tap close by. Either way, fit a water filter: filtered water protects the boiler and valves from scale and improves flavour.

Grinder, cleaning and coffee

Budget for a commercial coffee grinder alongside the machine, because shot consistency starts with the grind. Backflush the groups and purge and wipe the steam wands every day with a coffee machine cleaner. For beans, start with our espresso coffee beans. Business customers can apply for a business account for up to 25% off RRP on coffee beans.

FAQs

What is a commercial manual coffee machine?

It is a traditional espresso machine run by a barista. You grind and dose the coffee, lock the portafilter into the group and steam the milk yourself. "Manual" does not mean a lever machine: the machines on this page have programmable buttons that stop each shot at a set volume. An automatic or bean-to-cup machine does the grinding and milk for you. Those are in our office and workplace range.

What size commercial coffee machine do I need?

Choose by how many people will make coffee at once and how busy your peak is. A one-group machine such as the Rocket Boxer 1 Group suits offices, small cafés, carts and back bars. A two-group machine lets two people brew at once and is the usual café choice. Measure your bench first: the Boxer 2 Group is 630 mm wide and the ECM Profi Due 585 mm.

Does a commercial coffee machine need a 15 amp power point?

It depends on the machine's rated power. At 240 V a 10 amp outlet supplies about 2,400 W and a 15 amp outlet about 3,600 W. Higher-rated machines, such as the 4.3 kW Rocket Boxer 2 Group, need a dedicated circuit. A 15 amp plug will not fit a 10 amp outlet. Check the rating on the product page and have a licensed electrician confirm your supply before delivery.

Do commercial coffee machines need to be plumbed in?

Most commercial espresso machines are plumbed into a cold water line and a drain, so the boiler refills automatically during service. Some can run from a tank. The ECM Elektronika Profi Due switches between a built-in tank of about 3 litres and a direct water connection. Fit a water filter on any plumbed machine to protect the boiler from scale.

What is a group head on a coffee machine?

The group head is the brew unit the portafilter locks into, where hot water is pushed through the coffee. A "single head" or one-group machine has one; a two-group machine has two, so two shots can be made at once. Group design affects temperature stability. For example, the Crem EX3 has a pre-infusion chamber in the group that wets the coffee before full pressure.

What is the best coffee machine for a small office?

If someone in the office is happy to learn to make espresso, a compact one-group machine gives café-style coffee. The ECM Elektronika Profi Rotary and Expobar MegaCrem 1 Group are good starting points. If staff just want to press a button, an automatic machine is a better fit; see office and workplace coffee machines.

How do you clean a commercial coffee machine?

Every day, backflush each group with a coffee machine cleaner, soak the portafilter baskets, and purge and wipe the steam wands after each jug. Empty and rinse the drip tray at close. Some machines, including the Expobar MegaCrem and Crem EX3, have a built-in group cleaning cycle that runs the backflush for you. Change the water filter and book servicing as the manufacturer recommends.
