How to choose a milk system cleaner
Milk leaves fat, protein and mineral deposits inside milk tubes, frothers and steam wands. Cafetto lists sour milk, milk stone, odour and bacteria among the results of residue that a water rinse leaves behind. A milk cleaner dissolves it. The right one depends on your machine and how much milk it runs.
Jura machines: Milk System Cleaner Mini Tabs
Jura's Mini Tabs work with the machine's automatic milk system cleaning program to remove milk fats and proteins. The 90g bottle has a built-in dispenser: each click doses one clean, and it is rated for 30 cleaning procedures. Keep the dispenser and top it up from the 180g or 375g refill bottle. The larger bottles cost less per gram, so they suit offices and anyone who froths milk every day.
Automatic and commercial machines: Cafetto liquids
Cafetto's liquid cleaners are diluted at 50 mL per litre of warm water. You flush the solution through the milk system following your machine maker's instructions, then rinse with a litre of clean water.
- MFC Blue: an alkaline cleaner that removes milk fat and helps control scale. Cafetto recommends it for daily use on machines that run a lot of milk.
- MFC Green: registered with Australian Certified Organic as an allowed input, phosphate-free and readily biodegradable. It suits workplaces that want a greener option.
- Milk Line Cleaner: a low-foam liquid for routine cleaning of milk lines, frothers and steam wands.
Heavy build-up and blockages
If milk froth turns patchy or the system keeps blocking, a daily cleaner may not be enough. Cafetto Milk Block Cleaner is a heavy-duty alkaline concentrate for fully automatic machines with heavy milk build-up. Dilute it 1:20, run it through the milk line for about 10 minutes, then flush with fresh water.
Tablets for WMF and other super-automatics
Urnex Rinza tablets dissolve in warm water at one tablet per 250 mL. Run the solution through automatic frothers and milk lines, then rinse with fresh water.
Steam wands
Purge and wipe the wand after every jug. For dried-on milk, soak the tip in a cleaning solution. Cafetto's directions for MFC Green are 50 mL in 500 mL of warm water for 5 minutes. Then rinse the wand and purge it.
How often to clean
Run the milk cleaning program whenever your machine asks for it, and always follow your manual. Busy machines in offices and cafés need a clean every day. If you run an office coffee machine or a home automatic with a milk system, keep a bottle on hand so you don't skip a clean when stock runs out.
FAQs
What milk cleaner should I use in a Jura coffee machine?
Use Jura Milk System Cleaner Mini Tabs. They are made to work with the automatic milk system cleaning program on Jura machines, and they remove milk fats and proteins from the milk tubes. Start with the 90g dispenser bottle, which doses one clean per click and covers 30 cleans. Then refill it from the 180g or 375g bottle. Your machine's manual lists the cleaning products Jura approves for your model.
How do you use Jura milk system cleaner mini tabs?
Start the milk system cleaning program from your Jura's display and follow its prompts. When the program asks for cleaner, click the dispenser once to release one dose into the milk cleaning container. Add fresh water as your manual describes, connect the milk pipe and let the program run. It finishes by flushing the system with water. Don't put tablets straight into the water tank or the milk system.
Is there an alternative to Jura milk system cleaner?
Universal milk cleaners such as Cafetto MFC Blue and Urnex Rinza tablets are made for automatic milk systems in general. They are diluted in water and run through the machine's cleaning cycle. Jura's own cleaning programs are designed around its Mini Tabs, though. Check your manual and warranty terms before you switch, and don't mix different cleaners in one cycle.
How often should I clean my coffee machine's milk system?
Clean it whenever your machine prompts you, and rinse the milk system after every use. Cafetto recommends a daily clean for machines that run a lot of milk, such as office and café machines. Dried milk turns sour and builds up as milk stone. Over time that blocks tubes and frothers and spoils the taste of the milk. A machine used once a day at home can follow its own cleaning prompts.
Can I use milk frother cleaner on a steam wand?
Yes. Most liquid and tablet milk cleaners can also be used on manual steam wands. For Cafetto MFC Green, mix 50 mL in 500 mL of warm water. Soak the wand tip for 5 minutes, then rinse it and purge with steam. Urnex Rinza solution (one tablet per 250 mL of warm water) can also be used to soak steam wand parts. Wipe and purge the wand after every jug as well.
Can I use coffee machine cleaning tablets on the milk system?
No. Coffee cleaning tablets are made for coffee oils in the brew group and group head. Milk cleaners are made for milk fats, proteins and mineral deposits in the milk circuit. Most automatic machines run separate programs for each and ask for a different product. Use a milk cleaner from this page for the milk system and a coffee machine cleaner for the coffee side.
