How to Choose the Best Automatic Coffee Machine for Your Home
Selecting the right automatic coffee machine depends on your coffee preferences. Important factors to consider include the machine’s milk capabilities (such as the ability to create flat versus foam milk) and temperature control for milk. Additionally, you might want to look for special features like cold brew, extra shot, and sweet foam. Use this guide to identify models that suit your household’s needs, or schedule a free demonstration to compare different machines in person at our showrooms in Melbourne or Sydney.
Milk Options - Flat & Foam
Not all automatic coffee machines can make flat whites. Flat whites require flat milk, which is different from the foam used in cappuccinos. Before buying, check whether the machine offers “flat milk” or only “foam milk” capability.
Jura models by milk capability:
- Foam milk only (cappuccinos): Jura C8 series
- Foam AND flat milk (flat whites, cappuccinos, lattes): Jura S8, J10, Z10
Our recommendation: If anyone in your household drinks flat whites, choose a model with flat milk capability (S8 or above). If you only drink cappuccinos or black coffee, the C8 offers excellent value.
Tip: The Jura milk frother, sold separately, can prepare hot milk or foam for coffee when a milk coffee is required.
Milk Temperature
Some automatic coffee machines offer programmable milk temperature, while others have a fixed setting. This matters if you prefer extra-hot coffee or have specific temperature preferences.
Jura models by milk temperature control:
- Fixed temperature: Jura C8, S8, J10 — delivers milk at standard café temperature (~55°C) when using a pre-heated cup
- Adjustable temperature: Jura Z10 — program your preferred milk temperature from warm to extra-hot
Tip: If you always order “extra hot” at cafés, choose the Z10 with adjustable temperature. For standard temperature preferences, any model will deliver excellent results with a pre-warmed cup.
Coffee Strength
The strength of coffee brewed in automatic machines is primarily determined by the brewing unit’s capacity, which is measured in grams of coffee (Coffee capacity). Additionally, the fineness of the coffee grind plays a secondary role in strength.
Extra Shot Function
Models equipped with the extra shot function can automatically add a second espresso shot, grind, pour, grind again, and pour.
Tip: Don’t immediately adjust the grind to the finest setting, thinking that this will give you the strongest coffee. For stronger coffee, first increase the coffee dose and water quantity to match. It’s important to note that if you adjust the grind finer, the machine will grind slightly less coffee, and you may need to reduce the water volume to prevent over-extracting the shot. Often, a slightly coarser grind will give you a better shot.
Extra Shot Function
The extra shot function is ideal if you enjoy strong coffee or use large mugs. This option lets you program drinks to automatically add a second espresso shot. Alternatively, you can add an extra shot to a standard-strength drink before brewing it. This feature will enable the machine to grind up to 32 grams in models with a 16-gram brewing unit.
Cold Brew Function
Cold brew from an automatic machine uses cold water pulsed at high pressure through coarsely ground coffee. The result is a naturally sweet, low-acidity iced coffee—different from simply pouring hot espresso over ice, which tastes bitter.
Cold brew extracts fruity, aromatic notes from the beans without the bitterness of heat extraction. It’s perfect for Australian summers or anyone who enjoys iced lattes and cold coffee drinks.
Tip: Add ice cubes to your glass and pour the cold brew on top.
Sweet Foam Function
The Sweet Foam function flavours the milk foam during preparation by heating and frothing the milk, then evenly flavouring it using the syrup attachment. This results in a milk foam delicately sweetened with the flavouring of your choice for next-level indulgence.

FAQs - Home Automatic Machines
What is an automatic coffee machine?
An automatic coffee machine (also called bean-to-cup) grinds fresh coffee beans, brews espresso, and froths milk at the touch of a button. Unlike manual espresso machines that require barista training, automatic machines deliver good quality coffee in under 60 seconds with no training required. They’re ideal for home users who want convenience and speed.
What's the difference between automatic and manual coffee machines?
Automatic coffee machines take care of everything—grinding, tamping, brewing, and milk frothing—with just the press of a button. In contrast, manual machines require you to grind the beans (usually with a separate grinder), distribute and tamp the coffee, time the extraction, and steam the milk yourself. While automatic machines produce consistent results regardless of your skill level, manual machines offer more control but require barista training and a longer heat-up time, typically between 5 and 25 minutes, compared to just 60 seconds for automatic machines.
Is a Jura coffee machine worth the money?
Jura machines are a worthwhile investment for daily coffee drinkers. Swiss-engineered for durability, they typically last 10+ years with proper maintenance. Key value factors include: 25-month manufacturer warranty, quiet operation (ideal for open-plan living), consistent coffee quality from the first cup to the thousandth, and automatic cleaning that takes under 2 minutes daily. At 2-3 coffees per day, a Jura pays for itself within 18-24 months compared to buying coffee at a café.
Can I try a Jura coffee machine before buying?
Yes. My Coffee Shop offers free demonstrations at our Melbourne and Sydney showrooms by appointment. During your demonstration, you can:
- Taste coffee from different Jura models side-by-side
- Compare features
- Test milk texturing (foam vs flat milk)
- Ask our Jura specialists any questions
We also include a free one-on-one training session with every purchase to ensure you get the best results from your machine.
What coffee beans are best for automatic coffee machines?
For automatic coffee machines, use medium- to medium-dark-roast beans with a roast date within 1-8 weeks. Avoid oily, dark-roasted beans as the oils can clog the grinder over time. The beans should be dry to the touch, not shiny. Avoid flavoured beans as the added oils and sugars can damage internal components.
How do you clean an automatic coffee machine?
Daily cleaning for automatic coffee machines
- After each milk coffee: The machine will automatically rinse the milk system.
- End of day: Run the automatic milk system clean.
- When prompted: Run the automatic coffee system clean and replace the water filter.
- Weekly: Clean the drip tray/grounds assembly (Some are dishwasher safe - Check your manual), rinse the water tank.
Jura machines prompt you when cleaning is required—simply follow the on-screen instructions.
