Everything you need for great coffee at home; equipment, beans, cleaning supplies, accessories, and service, all in one place.

Automatic Coffee Machines

Automatic coffee machines are the ultimate convenience for busy households and home offices. With the press of a button, these machines grind fresh beans, extract espresso, steam milk, and even clean themselves. Premium brands like JURA offer sophisticated models that produce consistent, café-quality results without requiring barista skills.

Best for: Families, busy professionals, and those wanting consistent results with minimal effort. Automatic machines shine when convenience and consistency matter most.

Price range: $2,000-$5,000, depending on features such as touchscreen controls and milk-system automation.

Manual Coffee Machines

Manual coffee machines provide complete control over the coffee-making process. You will manually manage the grind, dose, distribution, and tamping to achieve the ideal extraction. Additionally, you can steam milk to your preferred temperature and texture for the perfect cappuccino or café latte. Popular models from brands like Profitec and Lelit deliver professional results at various price points.

Best for: These machines are ideal for coffee enthusiasts who enjoy the ritual of making espresso, those looking to develop their barista skills, and anyone who appreciates the art of coffee-making. With practice, these machines reward your efforts with exceptional results.

Price range: $1,200-$7,000, depending on build quality, boiler type, and features such as PID temperature and flow control.

Which Home Coffee Machine is Best for Me?

Automatic vs. Manual

Use the key criteria below to determine which type of machine best suits your needs.

Enquire

Skill Level

Are you excited to develop your barista skills and learn latte art, or do you prefer a good cup of coffee without the hassle of learning? Manual espresso machines require practice, but they offer rewarding skill development, complete control, and the highest-quality coffee. In contrast, automatic machines produce a good coffee instantly without any training or practice, although they offer less control.

Coffee Quality

An automatic coffee machine can produce good-quality coffee, but it doesn’t match the quality of café-style coffee. It cannot replicate the precise coffee extraction or the texture of milk foam that a skilled barista can achieve from a manual machine. To enjoy coffee that rivals your favourite café, you’ll need a reliable manual machine, as well as some barista training and practice.

Heat-up Time

An automatic machine can prepare coffee in just 60 seconds after being turned on. In contrast, a manual machine takes between 5 and 25 minutes to heat up, depending on the type of machine.

Time to Make a Coffee

An automatic machine will make a milk coffee in 60 seconds at the press of a button; however, a coffee from a manual machine takes 2 to 3 minutes, depending on the machine and the user's expertise.

Consistency

As long as the machine is maintained correctly, coffee from an automatic machine is consistent regardless of who makes it. The quality produced by a manual machine depends on the skills of the person making the coffee.

Customisation

When using an automatic coffee machine, you can customise several aspects to suit your preferences, although there are limits. For instance, you can adjust the grind fineness, but the range of adjustment is narrow and determined by the machine. In contrast, pairing a grinder with a manual coffee machine provides you with much greater control over the grind, enabling you to grind finer for better extraction.

Milk
Milk Temperature

Some automatic machines have a fixed milk temperature, while others allow you to program the milk temperature. If you like a hot coffee, check for this feature. The milk temperature from a manual machine is entirely in your control, with 60 degrees being the ideal temperature for taste and up to 65 degrees if you like your coffee extra hot.

Milk Texture

Silky milk, essential for latte art, cannot be achieved with an automatic milk frother, which tends to produce milk that is too airy. To achieve the perfect cafe-quality milk texture, a good steam wand is necessary. A well-designed manual machine will provide this feature; however, if you own an automatic machine, you can enhance your frothing capabilities with accessories like the Morning Dream.

Alternative Milks

Some alternative milks are thicker and more viscous than dairy milk, which makes them unsuitable for automatic milk frothers; they typically come out too hot or spluttery. The best method for frothing these milks is to use a steam wand.

Clean Up

After preparing coffee with an automatic machine, it automatically rinses the milk and coffee systems. At the end of the day, you need to clean the milk system, which takes about one minute to initiate; the cleaning then runs entirely automatically. The coffee system also cleans automatically when prompted by the machine.

With a manual machine, you must clear the steam wand with steam and wipe it down after each use. Additionally, the machine needs to be backflushed, and the portafilter and baskets should be soaked every two weeks, which takes approximately five minutes. All machines should be equipped with a water filter.

Jura automatic machines will prompt you when it’s time to change the filter; however, not all manual machines provide this reminder.

Bench Space

Consider the amount of bench space you have available.

Automatic Machines

Automatic machines require between 26 and 32 cm of space, depending on the model, plus an allowance for a milk container of 10cm, so the total space requirement is between 36 and 42 cm.

Manual Machines

A manual machine with a grinder requires between 32cm for a single-boiler machine with a built-in grinder and 50cm for a dual-boiler machine with a separate grinder.

Training

An automatic machine includes a manual with all the information required to program, use, and maintain the machine. A manual machine requires barista training to produce cafe-quality coffee.
