Choosing and using a BWT water filter jug
How the cartridge works
BWT's Magnesium Mineralized cartridge filters in stages. It traps particles, reduces limescale and heavy metals such as lead and copper, and swaps calcium for magnesium. Activated carbon then removes chlorine and other substances that affect taste and smell.
Filtered water for coffee and tea
BWT designs this cartridge for brewing tea and coffee, and says the lower limescale helps protect kettles and coffee machines. If you fill your machine's tank from the jug, keep descaling as your manual recommends with a coffee machine cleaner, and pair it with fresh coffee beans.
When to replace the cartridge
Each cartridge is rated for about 120 litres (at water hardness of 15–18 °dH). Change it after four weeks at the latest, even if you have not filtered that much. The BWT jug has a change indicator to remind you, and a 3-pack covers about three months.
Setting up a new cartridge
Soak the new cartridge in tap water for five minutes, press it into the funnel, then pour away the first jug of filtered water. Black specks in the first fills are harmless activated carbon and clear quickly.
FAQs
How often should I change a BWT water filter jug cartridge?
BWT says to replace the cartridge after four weeks at the latest, even if you have not reached its rated capacity of about 120 litres (rated at water hardness of 15–18 °dH). Replace it sooner if the indicator says so, and replace it if the jug has gone unused for more than two weeks. A 3-pack of cartridges covers about three months.
Do BWT replacement cartridges fit other BWT jugs?
Yes. BWT says every cartridge in its table water filter range fits every BWT table water filter jug, so the Magnesium Mineralized cartridges suit the AQUAlizer jug and BWT's other jugs. BWT only states compatibility with its own jugs, so check with the other brand before using these cartridges in a non-BWT jug.
Is BWT filtered water good for coffee machines?
BWT describes water from its Magnesium Mineralized cartridge as ideal for brewing coffee and tea. It reduces chlorine, which affects taste, and limescale, which BWT says helps protect coffee machines and kettles. Filtered water does not replace regular maintenance, so keep descaling your machine as the manufacturer recommends with a coffee machine cleaner.
Does the BWT filter jug remove fluoride?
No. BWT states that its table water filter cartridges do not reduce fluoride. The Magnesium Mineralized cartridge targets particles, limescale, heavy metals such as lead and copper, chlorine and some organic substances that affect taste and smell. If you want to remove fluoride, you will need a different type of filtration system.
