Choosing the Right Coffee Beans
We stock over 40 coffee bean blends from more than 20 roasters, in medium, medium-dark and dark roasts. The right roast depends mostly on how you brew and whether you take milk.
Shop by roast: Medium · Dark & Medium-Dark · or browse our espresso coffee beans.
Automatic (Bean-to-Cup) Machines
Best: Medium to medium-dark roast
Choose beans that look dry rather than shiny. Very dark, oily beans leave a residue that can clog the grinder and brewing unit, and most bean-to-cup manufacturers advise against them. Avoid flavoured beans for the same reason. A medium-dark espresso blend gives a full-bodied coffee that holds up well in lattes and cappuccinos. Automatic coffee machines
Manual Espresso Machines
Best: Medium to medium-dark roast
These roasts have developed enough sweetness and body for good crema, without the burnt notes very dark roasts can give under pressure. For milk drinks, a medium-dark blend adds body and chocolate notes that come through the milk. For short and long blacks, a medium roast shows more sweetness and fruit. Manual espresso machines
French Press (Plunger)
Best: Medium to medium-dark roast
The metal filter lets oils through, giving a fuller body. Medium to medium-dark roasts balance flavour and richness over the four-minute brew. Too light can taste thin; too dark can turn bitter. French press coffee makers
Drip Filter and Pour-Over
Best: Medium roast
Filter brewing and its paper filter favour lighter roasts that show off brighter, fruitier flavours. Choose a medium roast with tasting notes like fruit, citrus or honey.
Moka Pot
Best: Medium-dark to dark roast
A darker roast gives the strong, rich cup moka pots are known for. Grind finer than for a plunger, but coarser than espresso. Moka pots
The rule of thumb: the more control you have over brewing, the lighter you can go. With milk, or with an automatic machine, medium-dark is the safe choice.

FAQs
What are the best coffee beans for an automatic coffee machine?
Medium to medium-dark beans that look dry rather than oily. Oily dark roasts and flavoured beans leave a residue in the grinder and brewing unit that can cause blockages and extra servicing. Shop espresso coffee beans.
What are the best coffee beans for milk-based coffee?
Medium-dark espresso blends with chocolate, caramel or nutty notes. They have the body to come through milk in a latte, cappuccino or flat white, where lighter, fruitier coffees can taste thin or sour. Shop dark and medium-dark roasts.
Should you buy ground coffee or whole beans?
Whole beans if you have a grinder: they stay fresh for weeks after opening, and you can grind for each cup.
Ground coffee if you don’t: it’s ready to use and suits plungers, moka pots, filter brewers and machines with pressurised baskets. Ground coffee loses flavour faster once opened, so buy smaller bags and use them within one to two weeks.
How many cups of coffee are made from 1kg of coffee beans?
About 55 double-shot coffees (18 g each) or 100 single shots (10 g each). It depends on how much coffee you use per cup:
- Espresso machine: 7 g single = 140 · 10 g single = 100 · 14 g double = 71 · 18 g double = 55 · 20 g double = 50 · 22 g double = 45
- Automatic machine: 7–16 g per cup, so roughly 60–140 cups
- French press: 350 ml uses 18–24 g (40–55 brews); 1 litre uses 50–65 g (15–20 brews)
- Moka pot: 3-cup uses 15–20 g (50–65 brews); 6-cup uses 27–30 g (about 35 brews)
How long do coffee beans last?
Coffee beans don’t go off, but they lose flavour over time.
- Unopened: a sealed bag with a one-way valve keeps well for several months. Check the best-before date.
- Opened: best within 2–4 weeks, still good up to about 8 weeks, and flat after that.
Buy what you’ll use in about four weeks and keep it in an airtight container.
How do you store coffee beans to keep them fresh?
Keep beans away from air, moisture, heat and light.
- Best: an airtight, opaque container in a cool cupboard. A vacuum canister like the Airscape or Fellow Atmos is the gold standard.
- Short term (1–2 weeks): the original bag, air squeezed out and sealed tightly.
- Avoid the fridge: beans absorb moisture and odours.
- Freezer (long-term only): split into week-sized airtight portions, let each thaw fully before opening, and never refreeze.
What grind size should I use?
The shorter the brew, the finer the grind:
- Espresso: fine, like table salt
- Moka pot: medium-fine
- Drip filter and pour-over: medium, like sand
- French press: coarse, like sea salt
A burr grinder gives an even grind for every method. Blade grinders only suit plungers and filter. Browse coffee grinders.
Do you sell decaf coffee?
Yes. We stock decaf beans from St Ali and Lavazza, and decaf ground coffee from Lavazza, Illy and Bialetti. Shop decaf coffee.
How do coffee subscriptions work?
