Buying Lavazza coffee beans

About Lavazza

Lavazza's story started in 1895, when Luigi Lavazza opened his first store in Via San Tommaso in Turin, studied the origins and characteristics of different coffee beans and learned to blend them to suit his customers. He founded Luigi Lavazza SpA in 1927, and the company is still family-run and based in Turin. The blends below are the ones we stock for espresso machines, with two decaf options.

Qualità Oro

Lavazza Qualità Oro is the 100% Arabica blend, a combination of six varieties from the coffee-growing regions of Central and South America that Lavazza has made since 1956. It is a delicate medium roast with notes of fruit, flowers and honey, rated 4 out of 5 for strength.

Super Crema

Lavazza Super Crema is 60% Arabica and 40% Robusta, with beans from Brazil, Central America and Indonesia. Lavazza describes it as a delicate, mild coffee with a wonderfully creamy texture, with hazelnut and brown sugar in the cup. It is a medium roast rated 4 out of 5, and it is the Lavazza blend we recommend most often for bean-to-cup machines.

Crema e Aroma

Lavazza Crema e Aroma is built on selected Robusta with natural and washed Arabica alongside it. It is smooth and well rounded with light acidity and a fruity note, at medium strength (3 out of 5), and it is the most forgiving of the three in an automatic machine.

Decaf: Dek beans or Decaffeinato ground

Lavazza Professional Dek is a 500g bag of decaf beans that blends full-bodied Brazilian and delicate Asian coffees for a full flavour, rounded aroma and velvety crema. Lavazza uses a natural decaffeination method that it says leaves the taste intact. Caffè Decaffeinato is 250g of pre-ground decaf from South American beans, smooth and chocolaty with a rich body and no bitterness, and 99.9% caffeine-free. It suits plungers, stovetops, filter machines and espresso machines that take tamped ground coffee.

How to choose

If you pull straight espresso or make long blacks, Qualità Oro's all-Arabica blend is the natural pick. The Robusta share in Super Crema and Crema e Aroma gives thicker crema and a fuller body that stands up to milk and is forgiving in automatic machines, with Super Crema the creamier and Crema e Aroma the milder of the two. For decaf, choose Dek beans if you have a grinder and Decaffeinato ground if you do not. Lavazza's general guidance for a double espresso is 18g of coffee for 36g in the cup in 25 to 30 seconds at 93°C.
