How to brew coffee using the Hario V60 pour-over kit
1. Prepare your filter
Put your kettle on to boil at least 600ml of water, preferably filtered. While the water is heating, fold the pourover filter along its seam and place it inside the pourover cone. Set it on top of your server, and once the water is hot, rinse the filter with water and discard the water. This will remove any papery taste, preheat your pourover cone and server, and help keep your brew hot for longer.
- Dark roast: 80 - 85 degrees
- Medium roasts: 90 - 95 degrees
- Light roasts: 100 degrees
2. Weigh and grind the coffee
We recommend starting with a brew ratio of 1:16 - 16g of water for every gram of coffee. Choose your coffee dose based on your brew size. For example
- For 1-cup use 15-17g of coffee with 250-300g of water
- For 2-cup use 30-35g of coffee with 500-600g of water
Weigh your coffee dose and grind to a medium grind. You will get the best results from freshly ground coffee rather than pre-ground coffee. Place the coffee in the pre-wet filter. Place the entire setup on your scales and tare.
3. Bloom
Start your timer and bloom the coffee by adding a small amount of water to the coffee bed with a gentle circular motion. A good rule of thumb is to use twice as much water as coffee during this bloom stage. Gently swirl to mix the grounds and water, and let the coffee bloom for 30 - 45 seconds. You will see the brew bubble up as carbon dioxide escapes.
4. Pour
Now, continue to pour the remaining water over the grounds in a slow, controlled circular motion. Some pourover aficionados recommend pouring the brew water in 2-3 stages with a 10 second gep between pours, while others prefer a steady, constant stream. You will want to finish pouring the water well before your desired brew time.
5. Wait for the brew to finish
Allow the brew to finish extracting the coffee. Once the coffee bed is exposed and the extraction slows to a drip, the brew is complete. The total brew time should be around 2.5-3 minutes.
If your total brew time is too long, the brew will likely be over-extracted and taste bitter, dry and astringent. Coarsen your grind and brew again.
If your total brew time is too short, the brew will likely be under-extracted and taste bland, thin or acidic. Coarsen your grind and brew again.
For a stronger brew, increase the coffee dose.
