Choosing the Right Coffee Beans
We stock over 40 blends of coffee beans from 20+ brands, featuring different roast types ranging from medium to medium-dark and dark. Which is the best coffee for your brewing method?
Drip Filter Coffee
Best: Light to Medium roast
Light to medium roasts work beautifully in drip brewing because the longer contact time (4-5 minutes) and even water distribution allow the subtle, complex flavours to extract fully. These roasts preserve the coffee’s origin characteristics - bright acidity, floral notes, and fruity flavours. The paper filter also removes oils, so you want those nuanced flavours to shine through rather than relying on body from darker roasts.
French Press
Best: Medium to Medium-Dark roast
French press coffee makers benefit from medium to medium-dark roasts because the metal mesh filter allows oils and fine particles through, creating a fuller body. These roasts provide a good balance of flavour complexity and richness. The immersion brewing (4 minutes) extracts thoroughly, and medium-dark roasts offer chocolate and nutty notes that complement the press’s naturally heavy mouthfeel. Too light, and it can taste thin; too dark, and it becomes bitter with all the oils present.
Manual Espresso Machines
Best: Medium to Medium-Dark roast
Manual espresso machines offer control over pressure and extraction time, making medium to medium-dark roasts an ideal choice. These roasts have developed enough sugars for sweetness and body while maintaining complexity. They create that desirable balance between acidity and caramelisation. The slightly developed oils help produce good crema, and you avoid the burnt or ashy notes that very dark roasts can emphasise under high pressure.
Automatic Espresso Machines
Best: Medium-Dark to Dark roast
Automatic coffee machines typically use higher temperatures and less precise control, so medium-dark to dark roasts are more suitable. These roasts are more forgiving with the machine’s standardised parameters. The darker development creates consistent, bold flavours that stand up to milk in lattes and cappuccinos. The oils developed at this level also help produce reliable crema, which many automatic machines are optimised for.
General principle: The more control and gentleness in your brewing method, the lighter you can go to showcase complexity. The more automated or intense the extraction, the darker roasts will help maintain consistency and boldness.
FAQs
How long do coffee beans last?
Peak freshness timeline
- Week 1-2 after roasting: Peak flavour – absolute best
- Week 2-4: Still excellent, slight flavour decline
- Week 4-8: Good but noticeably less vibrant
- Beyond 8 weeks: Stale, flat flavours
Recommended
Buy only enough coffee beans to last up to four weeks and keep them in an airtight container with a vacuum seal.
How to store coffee beans to keep them fresh?
The 4 Enemies of Fresh Coffee Beans
- Air (Oxygen) – Causes oxidation and stale flavours
- Moisture – Promotes mould and destroys flavour oils
- Heat – Accelerates degradation
- Light – Breaks down flavour compounds
Storage Methods for Coffee Beans
1. An airtight or vacuum container in a cool, dark pantry/cupboard
An airtight container is good, but an airtight container with a vacuum is the gold standard. Use an opaque, airtight container (ceramic, stainless steel, or dark glass) kept away from light, heat, and moisture to preserve the beans’ oils and flavour compounds best. Room temperature is ideal.

2. Original bag with a clip or rolled tightly
Many coffee bags have one-way valves and are designed to be resealed. If you squeeze out excess air and seal tightly, this works reasonably well for short-term storage (1-2 weeks).
3. Airtight container in the refrigerator
Generally not recommended due to moisture and odour absorption issues, but slightly better than leaving beans exposed. Consider this only in extremely hot and humid climates, and ensure the container is truly airtight. It’s crucial to let beans come to room temperature before opening to prevent the moisture in the air from condensing on the beans.
4. Freezer (For long-term storage only)
Only recommended when you need to store beans for long periods (months).
- Divide into week-sized portions in airtight freezer bags.
- Remove air from bags before sealing.
- Let the frozen portion thaw completely before opening (prevents condensation).
- Never refreeze thawed beans.
How many cups of coffee are made from 1kg of coffee beans?
The number of coffees you will get from 1kg will vary greatly depending on your brewing strength.
Use about 10 grams of coffee for every 100 ml of water, filling the filter basket without tamping it down.
- 3 cup moka pot 15-20 grams
- 6 cup moka pot 27-30 grams
Use a ratio of 1 part coffee to 15–20 parts water, adjusting the amount of coffee to your taste preference for a stronger or weaker brew.
- 350ml French press 18 - 24 grams
- 1 litre French press 50 - 65 grams
Check the size of your filter basket.
- Single basket 7 grams (100 coffees)
- Single basket 10 grams (100 coffees)
- Double basket 14 grams (71 coffees)
- Double basket 18 grams (55 coffees)
- Double basket 20 grams (50 coffees)
- Double basket 22 grams (45 coffees)
Automatic machines use automated brewing units that hold between 7 and 16 grams of coffee. The amount of coffee is programmed and can typically be adjusted on a drink-by-drink basis to suit individual preferences. Some machines may also have an extra shot function that allows the machine to run two grinding processes consecutively, capable of producing up to 32 grams of coffee per shot.
Should you buy ground coffee beans or whole beans?
- Whole beans: Stay fresh longer, up to 8 weeks, allowing you to grind fresh for each cup for the best flavour.
- Pre-ground coffee: Convenient when you don’t have a grinder; however, once the coffee is ground, it goes stale very quickly, within hours, resulting in poor extraction, a loss of flavour, aroma, and crema. If you are using pre-ground, a pressureised filter basket will produce the best results.
How to grind coffee beans?
Methods for Grinding
Electric Burr Grinder
- Available in flat and conical burr types
- Available in hopper and single-dose versions
- Grinding 15-20g takes 7 - 14 sec, depending on burr size
- Provides a consistent, even grind size
- Adjustable settings for different brewing methods
- Pour beans into the hopper, select your grind size, and turn it on
- Suitable for all brewing methods
Manual Burr Grinder
- Grinding 15-20g takes about 1-2 minutes
- Consistent ceramic conical burrs
- Portable and durable
- Quiet operation
- Easy to clean
- Great for travel
- No electricity needed
- Suitable for all brewing methods
Electric Blade Grinder
- Less consistent than a burr grinder
- Pulse in short bursts (2-3 seconds) rather than continuous grinding
- Shake between pulses for more even results
- Grind time: 10-15 seconds for coarse, 20-30 seconds for fine
- Suitable for a drip filter or French press, not espresso
