This February, we’re proud to feature AIC Campfire Blend as our Coffee of the Month—a medium roast that brings together beans from four distinct origins to create something genuinely special. Beyond the exceptional cup quality, this coffee represents a partnership with Australian Indigenous Coffee, Western Australia’s largest Aboriginal-owned coffee supplier.
Australian Indigenous Coffee was founded in 2013 by brothers Blaze and Ezekiel Kwaymullina, Palyku people from the inland Pilbara region of Western Australia. What began as a small family operation supplying 5kg of coffee to a site near Nullagine has grown into a national success story.
The brothers started with less than $5,000 and a simple mission: to create employment opportunities for their family while building a sustainable business. A pivotal moment came in 2016, when Sodexo Australia began stocking AIC coffee at its sites, which catalysed rapid growth. Today, AIC supplies coffee to more than 40 Sodexo sites across Australia and has become the largest Aboriginal-owned coffee supplier in the country.
As Ezekiel Kwaymullina describes their philosophy, their blends are inspired by their native country. The Pilbara's earthy textures, the bright highlights of the spinifex, and the rich aromas of the bush all find expression in every bean they roast.
Campfire Blend brings together 100% Arabica beans from Ethiopia, Colombia, Brazil and Papua New Guinea. Each origin contributes its own character to create a harmonious, full-bodied coffee.
Origin: Ethiopia, Colombia, Brazil, Papua New Guinea
Bean Type: 100% Arabica
Roast Level: Medium
Strength: 3/5
Tasting Notes: Full, rich-bodied coffee with milk-chocolate, cherry and plum notes and a subtle jam-like sweetness
The medium roast level allows the natural characteristics of each origin to shine through while developing the rich chocolate notes that make this blend so approachable. At 3/5 strength, Campfire Blend offers enough body to stand up to milk while remaining smooth enough for those who prefer their coffee black.
Campfire Blend delivers a full, rich body that immediately feels substantial on the palate. The milk-chocolate notes arrive first, providing a familiar and comforting foundation. As the coffee develops, cherry and plum emerge—bright fruit notes that add complexity without overwhelming the cup.
The finish is where Campfire Blend truly distinguishes itself: a subtle jam-like sweetness that lingers pleasantly. This sweetness isn't cloying or artificial; it's the natural result of well-sourced beans and careful roasting.
For espresso-based drinks with milk, the chocolate notes become more pronounced, creating something reminiscent of a chocolate-covered cherry. As a long black or filter coffee, the fruit characteristics become more evident, with the plum notes particularly coming forward.
If you've enjoyed our MCS Community Blend, you'll find some interesting points of comparison with Campfire Blend.
| Characteristic | AIC Campfire Blend | MCS Community Blend |
|---|---|---|
| Origins | Ethiopia, Colombia, Brazil, PNG | Brazil, Indonesia, PNG |
| Bean Type | 100% Arabica | 100% Arabica |
| Roast | Medium | Medium |
| Strength | 3/5 | 4/5 |
| Body | Full, rich | Full-bodied |
| Key Notes | Milk chocolate, cherry, plum | Treacle, pear, aniseed |
| Character | Fruit-forward sweetness | Bold, designed for automatics |
Both coffees share Papua New Guinean beans and a medium roast profile, but they take different paths from there. Campfire Blend leans into fruit-forward sweetness with its Ethiopian and Colombian components, while Community Blend delivers a bolder, more robust cup. If you prefer a slightly lighter strength with more fruit complexity, Campfire is your choice. If you want maximum intensity optimised for automatic machines, Community Blend delivers.
Campfire Blend's balanced profile makes it versatile across brewing methods.
For Espresso: The full body and chocolate notes extract beautifully under pressure. The fruit sweetness provides natural balance, meaning you can pull slightly longer shots without the coffee becoming overly bitter.
For Milk-Based Drinks: The 3/5 strength means the coffee integrates smoothly with milk rather than fighting against it. Flat whites and lattes showcase the chocolate-cherry combination particularly well.
For Filter and Plunger: The medium roast and fruit-forward character translate excellently to longer extraction methods. Pour-over brewing tends to highlight the plum notes and jam-like sweetness.
Choosing AIC Campfire Blend means supporting more than just great coffee. Australian Indigenous Coffee has demonstrated how a small family business can scale sustainably while maintaining its connection to community and country.
