Every month, we spotlight one exceptional coffee — and for April 2026, we're featuring a blend with serious history behind it. Coffex Superbar is the flagship blend from Coffex Coffee Roasters, a Melbourne institution that has been roasting continuously since 1959. This April, Superbar is available at a special price of $52/kg (regular $55) — an invitation to discover one of the longest-running blends in Australian coffee.

Coffex Coffee Roasters was founded in 1959 by two Italian partners in Coburg, Melbourne, arriving at precisely the right moment — European migrants were bringing espresso culture to Australia, and the demand for properly roasted coffee was growing fast. What started as a modest operation with no more than ten staff has become one of Australia's most enduring coffee brands.
As demand grew, Coffex relocated to Brunswick and built a dedicated roasting facility. Today, they have a presence in every Australian state as well as Auckland, New Zealand, with multiple awards across their range. Superbar is their flagship — the blend that has defined Coffex from the beginning and kept offices and homes stocked with reliable coffee for over six decades.
Superbar is built from 100% Arabica beans sourced across four growing regions: Central America, South America, Africa, and Oceania. The medium roast preserves the inherent sweetness and character of those origins while keeping the cup smooth and approachable.
The tasting profile delivers dried fruit, toffee, and chocolate — a well-rounded sweetness on the mid-palate, clean toffee richness through the body, and a smooth chocolate finish that lingers without bitterness. At a strength of 3/5 with very low acidity, Superbar is structured enough to carry through milk but balanced enough to enjoy black. This is a blend designed for consistency above all else.
Superbar's low acidity and smooth profile make it versatile and forgiving across brew methods. For espresso, start with an 18–20g dose yielding roughly double (36–40g) over 25–30 seconds and adjust to taste. Milk-based drinks are where Superbar really shines — the toffee sweetness and chocolate body cut through steamed milk beautifully for rich flat whites and lattes. For plunger or filter, use a medium-coarse grind at around 93–96°C; the chocolate and dried fruit notes tend to become more prominent with these methods.
Vittoria Espresso Bar — $52/kg
Vittoria Espresso Bar is another Italian-heritage Australian blend with decades of history — 100% Arabica, dark roasted at 5/5 strength with a full-bodied traditional Italian style. If you prefer a bolder espresso with more roast intensity, Vittoria is the heavier-hitting option. Superbar's medium roast and 3/5 strength make it more versatile and approachable across brew methods.
Lavazza Super Crema — $54/kg
Lavazza Super Crema is a 60% Arabica / 40% Robusta blend at 4/5 strength with hazelnut and brown sugar notes. The Robusta component gives Super Crema thicker crema and slightly more body, while Superbar's 100% Arabica composition delivers a cleaner, more nuanced cup. If crema thickness and a nutty profile are your priority, Lavazza has the edge. For smoothness, low acidity, and a chocolate-forward finish, Superbar is the better fit.
Use your beans within four to six weeks of the roast date for optimal flavour. We recommend storing in a vacuum-sealed canister — the Fellow Atmos Electric Vacuum Canister maintains a vacuum seal automatically with one button push, or the Airscape Coffee Storage Canister uses patented airtight technology to push oxygen out. Keep your coffee in a cool, dark place and avoid refrigeration.
As autumn settles over Melbourne, Superbar is the kind of coffee that suits the season — warm, smooth, and deeply reliable. This April, Coffex's flagship blend is available for $52/kg, saving you $3 on a coffee that has genuinely stood the test of time. This pricing is available only in April.
