Models with a touchscreen will provide more customization options, including changing a drink name, adding multiple versions of a single drink, and changing the dispensing order of the drink—coffee first, followed by milk, or milk first, followed by coffee. For example, you can create two cafe lattes with different names, cup sizes, strengths, and even dispensing orders. Models with a selection button user interface will provide one version of each drink with a fixed name, fixed dispensing order and one size.

Consider the size of the coffees you want to make, cups (220ml), mugs (300ml), or large mugs (340ml). A model with a 10-gram coffee brewing unit is perfect for standard-strength cups. If you need to make strong cups, mugs or large mugs, you'll need to pour two or three 10 gram shots, depending on how strong you like your coffee. A model with a 16-gram coffee brewing unit can make a strong cup or a mug with a single 16 gram shot.

The extra shot function is ideal if you enjoy strong coffee or use large mugs. This option enables you to program drinks to automatically add an additional espresso shot. Alternatively, you can add an extra shot to a standard-strength drink before brewing it. This feature will enable the machine to grind a maximum of 20 grams in a model with a 10 gram brewing unit and 32 grams in a model with a 16 gram brewing unit.

If you enjoy iced coffee during summer, choose a model that can make cold brew. Cold water is pulsed at high pressure through coarsely ground coffee, resulting in a natural, energising, and refreshing drink in which the fruity aromas of the coffee are enjoyed without bitterness.

Not all machines allow you to make all drink types. If you drink flat whites, select a model that can produce flat and foam milk. Some models will only dispense foam milk suitable for cappuccinos and cafe lattes. If you need a machine specifically for making black coffee, the Jura ENA 4 might be perfect. This is Jura's black coffee-only model, which makes espresso, espresso doppio, and long blacks. The Jura milk frother, sold separately, can prepare hot milk or foam for coffee when a milk coffee is required.
